Well sony has stated the the new firmware 1.0e which will be available December 9, 2002 will allow writing at 4x for DVD+R. This drive is getting even better as it matures. In all honesty I have a 16x slot DVD Rom in another computer that I do my ripping with. Why put the wear and tear on the Sony Burner. Its just meant for burning. I am totally jazzed with the updated faster support of the DVD+R. I got the drive for $248.00 out the door from dell and its not only the most compatable drive available but now the fastest all around. Glad I didn't wait for the NEC..

More things to be added regarding DVD+RW. 4x DVD+RW and Mt. Rainier (DVD+MRW). No idea what drive will first offer those features out of the box.
