  1. I am having trouble going from VHS to DVD. I am able to capture the video into AVI format at 720x480. It's a 2hr vhs, but when I compress it to DVD quality it's 3.7gb. I know SVCD is a good quality for VHS tapes, but I want to be able to burn them on DVD and put two 2hr VHS onto a dvd. How am I suppose to do that. I was thinking of 352x480 DVD, but when I compress it with moviestar 5, the file size is 3.7gb eventhough it's not at 720x480? I just want to put 2 2hr VHS on one dvd and retaining maximum quality.

Resolution does not affect file size - it's the video and audio bitrates that determine this. Also, what's wrong with a 3.7Gb DVD file? That well within the 4.37GB limit of a DVD5.

I misread. It is all down to bitrate and you will need to use a bitrate calculator to determine the average bitrate to use (see links on this site for a calculator).

At a guess you would need to use similar to SVCD bitrates to fit 4hrs on a DVD and from what I have read on other forum posts the best resolution to use for VHS conversion is CVD spec (352 x 480 NTSC).

Your problem is moviestar.. Some DVD authoring packages do not respect the bitrate/resolution you want. You should encode to the bitrate 2000, 352x480 with TMPGEnc, then use SpruceUp to author them to DVD or one of the Ulead DVD products.

  6. Yea, I just figured it out I hope. I hope to author my first VHS very soon with my new Sony du500a.
