  1. I am totally new to video capute, but very computer savy

I would like some help on the best (and cheapest!) way to get some video from my camcorder to my PC for editing and then record it back to VHS for full screen TV viewing. (NTSC)

I was asked to do a little video splicing project for a family member, so I need a relativly quick turn around and so far everything I try, gives me spotty results.

Could someone provide me a quick 1-2-3 utilizing freeware/shareware if possible to give me the best possible results? Here is my run down.

Input: Camcorder video with audio (Video Eight)
Desired Output: VHS video with audio for full screen TV (NTSC) playback

    Hardware:
    Hauppauge WinTV-GO
    DELL PIII 600
    WINDOWS XP HOME
    384 MB RAM
    60GB FREE HD SPACE
    RIVA TNT2 ULTRA (32MB)
    SB LIVE! VALUE

    Help! Please!

  2. the quickest and easiest way for you to do this is via firewire capture. If you have a hi8 or 8 tape, I'd borrow a digital camera, and buy a firewire card ($15 on ebay). You won't lose any quality in the capture, and editing is very easy w/ DV. I don't know about freeware editing programs, but firewire would be the easiest way to get the video into the computer.

  3. to grityyz: yes vandakeg is absolutely right about the firewire, so there was one piece of advice to you. now for the editing software, you said that you were new to video capture, so i take that u are also new to editing, and for a novice, i recomment u use microsoft movie maker, it comes with windows xp, so there is a free editing software for u. to want more, download the movie maker beta2 at microsoft.com, it is also free. i found it an okay piece of software. u can use it to transfter your video, from the digital camcord to your pc (through a fireware card, using movie maker software)

now if u don't like ms movie maker, u can try for 30 days full version of intervideo windvd creator, download at intervideo.com

hope all will help you out.

  4. I was planning on using movie maker, I've played with it a bit and it seems simple enough and will handle everything I need.

    As for capture....

Let's say that borrowing a digital is not an option, what would be the best way using my current equipment (Hauppauge WINTV-GO and good o' RCA jacks out of the camera) to get a low frame loss, VHS Full screen capture. Resolution settings? Capture software? Codecs?
