The Philips Q35 is being sold at Target in the US. It's being sold at a premimum to the DVD724AT and has an identical feature list. I am curious to know whether anyone has this player. I reckon it's actually a Q50 without the on-board decoder.

    Anyone care to comment ?

    Cheers,

Since the my original post I have returned the DVD724 and got the Q35 instead. I have also region-hacked it successfully and it will convert from NTSC<->PAL and does a good job of it.

Build quality is a cut above the 724 as well. However, it still suffers from lack of depth on black levels as the 724 did.

Has anyone else tried this player ?

Just returned a 724at. Vertical Jpegs had sides curved in.
Bought a Q35 at Target. Jpegs play great.
Called Phillips to find out the difference between the units. The gal could only tell me that the Q35 didn't have an external Pro-Scan switch. Waste of time.
The specs say the Q35 has 3:2 and 2:2 pulldown, same as Q50. Don't know what this means other than Q50 has the sage/F chip and the 724at only has 3:2 in its spec. The Phillips web site comparison of the 724at and the Q35 shows the Q35 doesn't have the sage/f but this may not be reliable since it also shows the Q50 doesn't have progressive scan.
May have to open the case to find out more.

Anyway, the Q35 looks better and has a smaller footprint. Is that all there is to that????

    HI Again,

Was hack same as for the 724??

Also, forgot to mention that zoom on both units was blocky (pixelated?)
unlike a JVC XV-502SL I tried. Infortunately, the implementation of Jpeg playback on the JVC was poor. Took 10 to 20 seconds to "paint" a picture on the screen, whereas they just pop-up instantly on the Phillips units.
I wonder if the JVC XV-N5SL also has this problem.
