Microsoft's latest media software doesn't include a mechanism for uninstalling the software on Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Windows XP operating system. Typically software makers like Microsoft provide a simple means of uninstalling software--particularly software such as Media Player 9 Series that has yet to be officially released.

The Redmond, Wash.-based company released the public beta version last week amid much fanfare in Hollywood.

Windows Me and XP users must rely on a feature called "System Restore" to roll back their Windows installation to a time before they installed Media Player 9 Series if the want to uninstall it. The clunky alternative doesn't really remove all Windows Media Player 9 Series files and could potentially wipe out other system changes.

David Caulton, a Windows Media product manager, said the uninstall issue isn't a bug or mistake: Microsoft intended the software to work that way, and the company warns people before they install the software that it's hard to get rid of it.

since i prefer media player 6.4 -- personally i would fdsk and reinstall XP to really get rid of it ..

though i see no mention of it -- i wonder if you just went ahead and re-installed media player 8 would re-associate the media files to 8 ...

next time read the EULA, which nobody reads, as posted right at the top of the download page, in highly visible red type:
    ----
Note: This is a beta release. Windows XP users will need to use the System Restore feature to return to their previous player. Please read the release notes before installing.

  4. Actually, it is quite easy to uninstall Media Player or any other "build-in" feature of XP without screwing up. Search your PC for SYSOC.INF (it is a hidden file so use the advanced search to search for hidden files also - it should be in WINDOWS or WINNT folder), open it up in Notepad, find the line that reads MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,HIDE,7 and delete HIDE leaving it to read MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,,7 then save the changes. Go to ADD/REMOVE, Add/Remove Windows Components, highlight Accessories and Utilities and click Details..., select Mulimedia and click Details... and untick Media Player. DONE

that method will remove it partially but all file associations will be lost as well as reg of some codecs ..

but installing something else after your method above may partially fix the above mess one would be in ..
