  1. Someone just told me that if you rename the avi file to .dat or .mpg and then burn the renamed file by adding it to the svcd or vcd normal burning folder structure in say nero then this will work and saves having to convert to mpg using tmpgenc or whatever. Is this true as it seems too easy to be true ?
folder structure is EXT + MPEG2 (where the movie file goes) and SVCD. The EXT folders always contain the same files such as .svd files

Reggie, the file needs to be MPEG format before you can create a VCD, CVD, SVCD, or DVD.

What your friend is probably referring to is a DIVX AVI. These are often burned to disks as DATA, and played back with an AVI compatible media player.

  5. so in theory if i rename the file from avi to mpg (or mpeg) and burn this it will work and thus no need to use tmpgenc to convert ?? or am i missing something here which is probably the case
    Thanks in advance

  6. I wish it was so simple unfortnately it is not. If you want a VCD then the file has to be in MPEG1 VCD compliant format. There are no two ways about this. So till somebody comes out with some major technology breakthrough you will have to use tmpgenc.

  7. AFAIK, if you take an avi file, no matter what the extension, and try to add it to a VCD compilation in Nero, Nero will accept it. If it is not MPG internally, Nero will convert it to VCD compliant mpeg before burning the disk. This takes about as long as using TmpGenc in the first place and produces a much lower quality result.

Doing this takes approx the same amount of time but requires less user action for a much inferior end result, its up to you.

Definately not suggested. The MPEG encoding engine in Nero is pretty bad. Just renaming a file doesn't change it's format Reggie. You have to convert it with an MPEG encoder like TMPGenc. Their pulling your leg.
