  1. If i back up my dvd films using a dvd recorder, will it play on any stand alone dvd player, or does the player have to read cdrw etc.

The dvd player must support the dvd media you are burning on like dvd-r,dvd+r,dvd-rw or dvd+rw. Good dvd-r media seems to have one of the best compatibility, www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers

  3. I gather that if the player does not support the reading of cdr ie vcd or mp3 , it is unlikely to play a dvd-r either ?

that's not really the case. some of the early sony dvd players will not play cdr's or mp3 discs but will play dvd-r's.

  6. It is really simple about 95% of dvd players will read dvd-r. It has abusolutly nothing to do with whether they read cd-r or not. I dvd-r is designed to played in a dvd player where a cd-r is designed for cd player. Alot of time if a dvd player does not read a dvd-r it is not the player but the program used to author the dvd. Some dvd players are picky about the disc lay out. I would suggest using dvdmaestro for authoring.

  7. Also I think that 95% gets higher when looking at new dvd players . as designer take into to account dvd-r. I haven't found a dvd player that won't play dvd-r if authored with dvd maestro yet.
