how do i get avi files to play on my computer

i downloaded some movies and i can't get them to play. i downloaded nimo codec pack and they still won't play. some avi files play and others don't . can somebody help

How are you trying to play the AVI files?

....and are you sure those files that don't play are AVIs. If yes, did you select ALL codecs to be installed when you installed Nimo Codec Pack?

How do we know which Codec is needed for each AVI files ?

AVI codec are so fragmented, such a pain !

I need to load many to play the stuff off camera capture, web, and other...

You can check which codec you need in AVIs properties - it should tell you which one was used to encode it. If not, open the AVI in Virtual Dub and go File->File Information - it should tell you here too.

i got the files from users on kazaa. and most of the files i can view its just some i cant. i tried viewing with divx player and windows media but i just get a blank screen

Those files are, most likely, corrupted. Download DivFix, open your file with it and press Rebuild Index. Now they should play if all the codecs are installed.
