  1. I just found this forum and it looks like the answer to all my questions. Im in the process of reading the old stuff, but figured Id post this one to try to get a quick answer so I know where to start.

I've downloaded about 50 movies from Kazza. Most are in Avi and some are MPEG's. I watch them on my computer but I was thinking of getting a DVD player and would like to watch them on it. Can I play them as is or do I have to comvert them all to something else? Is there something I should look for in a DVD player that would give me more options?

Right now I just record them on VHS and watch them on my VCR. Will it look much better in VCD format played on a DVD player or about the same as VHS?

And some quick links to topics that can get me started would be great

To watch avi or mpg on a standalone dvd player they will need to be converted to a mpeg1 or mpeg2 stream and then burned to cd.

mpeg1 is for VCD(videocd's) - almost VHS quality
mpeg2 is for SVCD(supervideocd's)- Laserdisc quality

Read about converting on the tabs on the left.

convert from divx(avi) to VCD or SVCD

  3. When you look for a Dvd player, make sure you check out the
"dvd players" tab to the left. Not all Dvd players will play mpeg1 or mpeg2.
Make sure you find one that is compatible!!
