  1. I’m fairly new to this whole video thing and I’m looking for a good encoder for MiniDV to DVD burning. I’ve been looking at and trying out TMPGEnc and Cinema Craft Encoders. So my question is this: Other that the obvious reasons (one cost more and one is about twice as fast encoding) what other differences are there between these two encoders? Am I missing a major difference, other than price?

    Thanks
    Ben

    Spots,
I almost wasn't going to answer this since this is one topic that's sure to bring a lot of debate with it, but I'm posting a link to a guide that compares most of the major encoders. http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=113633
Myself I prefer TMPGEnc simply for the fact of the cost benefit ratio as compared to CCE. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses and in the end IMHO it's up to personal preference.
    Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack

The main differences between the encoders are price and speed. CCE is at least twice as fast as TMPGenc but is obviously much more expensive.

Both can produce totally compliant mpeg1 and mpeg2 files for use with vcds, svcds, and dvds. CCE allows you to tweak the encoding process (bias, image quality priority, manual bitrate modification of particular scenes, etc...) much more than TMPGenc but TMPGenc has more built in filters and options.

If you shell out the extra money for CCE you will be paying for speed and any quality improvements you notice over TMPGenc. So test them for yourself and see if CCE even looks better to your eyes and make up your own mind. For the casual encoder TMPGenc is all you really need though.
