DVD movies not playing on pS2???

I have come across a couple DVD movies that do not want to play on my playstation 2, but play on a standalone DVD player. Is this common, have you heard anything? If this is common, do the newer PS2 machines correct this problem (my PS2 is a version 1, from the inital sale date in the US). TIA to all.
