SmartRipper failed me for the first time ever last night. I was backing up Harry Potter and on 6th VOB it would stop in the middle and not do any more of the disk.

I tried repeatedly and it would always stop in the same area. I tried doing the next VOB and it wouldn't process any part.

After checking here, I decided to try DeCrypter. That proceeded to process 6 , 7, and 8 with no problem. So it wasn't the drive, DVD, or anything else.

SmartRipper is one of the best programs I have used so I thought I would pass on this info to anyone else that might find the same problem.

I had no problem with smartripper and HP. Perhaps you had a spot on the dvd that the drive didn't read the first couple of times. It just happened to read it correctly when trying dvddecrypter.
    Have a good one,

I tried again after dvddecrypter worked, and SmartRipper still wouldn't do it so it would have to be a heck of a coincidence. I tried four separate times!

  4. Ditto.

I've experienced the same thing previously (different DVD). On the rare disc, SmartRipper stopped working (probably a problem with the DVD) but DVD Decrypter managed to plough on through (and worked).

  5. I also had a problem trying to rip an IMAGE dvd of the Boris Karloff movie, BLACK SABBATH. The first time I tried to rip it with Smart Ripper, using the Backup process, the program warned me as soon as I opened it that some files could not be unlocked. I followed the process of opening the movie with win dvd and watching for a few minutes, then I opened it with smart ripper and didn't get the warning. However, after I burned it, using Nero as prescribed in the instruction on this and other pages, the movie wouldn't play on the pc or stand alone. So then I tried dvd decryptor, and it seemed to de encrypt everything, but still, came out with a non playable dvd. I am tired of wearing out my burner, a pioneer 104 with trials and errors. Any advice would be appreciated. I am using r's, but then i went to rw's with no results either way.

  6. I don't have a solution, but I can offer my experience...when trying to rip Jurassic Park 3 with smartripper, I had the same thing happen: it froze at a certain spot and wouldn't rip past this point no matter what. The disc was clean and the drive was good. I later determined that it stopped ripping at the DVD layer switch on JP3. This is the only time it has ever failed me. Maybe it just can't handle certain dual-layer dvd's.

  8. I think there is no need to be rude with others just because we think we are the ultimate dvd ripping authority on this planet.
After 18 years in the TV and Film Industry here in Mexico, having passed through every posible position and job in it, including Directing, Postproducing, Animating, Compositing, Editing, Producing, Scoring, Supervising, and just EVERYTHING (and I mean it: everything), I switched to DVD authoring. (And believe me, since I started on my own, I haven't slept a whole night thanks to the workload)
AND I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE HARRY POTTER MOVIE.
I just used DVDdecrypter and it worked.
Every other movie I have ripped has worked all the way through Smartripper. DVD Decrypter had always fell short for me against Smartripper, but this time It won.

BTW: I also think it's the layer's end.

EricB: Are you too using the Pioneer A103 DVD-RW drive to rip? That is what I use. Maybe the non-burning DVD drives don't have this problem.
In this industry, Sadly, The future was yesterday.

  9. I found that Harry Potter wouldn't rip with smart ripper either, but would work with Decrypter. I wounder if this has to do with the hardware involved or maybe there are different versions of Harry Potter.

    Thanks for the tip,
    Kodenine

  10. I have to agree that it might be the DvD, because with HP, my ripping speed would slow down in half from 5-6 to 2-3 on the last 2 vob files.

I use a 104 and Nero to burn and have not had any problem. It's important that VIDEO_TS folder be in capitol letters. I use Nero 5569 to burn. ISO should be set to level 1 and character set to ISO9660,relax both ISO restrictions and turn off Joliet. This works every time for me.

  13. I had problems with HP too.......i think there may be a couple of double encrypted VOB's in there

  14. No problems with SR on region 4 version of HP, although I have
been experiencing a couple of slow downs and bad vob output
under win2k and XP with some R2 stuff using smartripper. I'm going to stay with DVD Decrypter for now.

  15. Newbie here. Just did my first DVD rip. And guess what, Smartripper wouldn't work. I tried every which way. Smartripper said it had access to everything and showed all as unlocked. Finally found DVD Decrypter and it worked beautifully. This was on the Mr. Show (seasons 1 & 2) DVD.
