  3. I think BJ is being facetious. If you have a 16X9 anamorphic widescreen movie you can watch it on your 4X3 in letterbox format. If your wife is referring to the letterbox, why don't you send her to www.thedigitalbits.com and click on the Widescreen for Dummies link and see how she feels then?

IOW, no, converting to P&S is not a matter of "encoding" but editors\directors choosing what portion of the screen you are going to lop off to make it fit a 4X3 screen. This "view" changes at any given time depending on what is happening at that moment and where within the 16X9 frame(action-wise, for example).

a lot easier (any maybe cheaper, depending on how many DVDs you have) -- buy a DVD player with a "zoom" feature, you can zoom in on the center of the picture and get rid of the letterboxing. The picture is less sharp, but I bet you're wife won't care. That's what my wife does - I can't see it myself, I want to see the flix the way they were shot. I know the Toshiba 3805 does this, maybe the cheaper ones in the line do also (2800, 2805, 3800) Nice player that handles DVD-R & DVD-RW, btw.

But the result: cutting out some at the left and right side
should be handeld by the DVD player in the first place.

Look in the DVD setup to see what option you have with 16:9 movies.

One DVD player I have gives me 3 options:
    1) Leave it as it is with black bars on the top and bottom.
    2) Cut out part on the left and right side.
    3) Stretch out (vertical) so not black bars (side effect: long faces)

  7. I did it within Ifoedit.. change it to Pan and Scan and it works perfectly.. Just chops the sides off slightly.. You may not be able to see the ends of the leaves on the trees but who cares...
