I recently purchased a second hand Pentium 111 800mhz computer with windows 98 installed. I'm experiencing a problem with it turning it's self on after it has been shutdown and turned off. It can come on after half an hour or as long as 48 hours after being turned off, there is no set time period for it to do this. I have taken the computer back to the seller but he can find nothing wrong with it (he has had it for 48 hours and it still has not turned on by it's self). The sellers theory is that the power supply in my home is the problem but I have not experienced this problem with the other two computers I have in the same room of my house. Can anyone suggest any other reason why this may be happening?

Obviously it's possessed. Try switching it off completely at the power strip.

  5. It might be a wake on Lan or wake on ring. Check in Bios if you have it set that way.

  6. was going to be my suggestion too.

if its got a modem connected and someone calls the number the computer can turn itself on, if this option is on.

go into your bios and look for wake on modem, and check wake on lan too even though wake on lan would mean you have got other problems on your network.

After reading your replies I went home and did a few tests and found that the computer turned on when someone phoned my home number which is is the same line my external modem is conected to. I also found that if the computer is turned off and I turn the modem power on it also turns the computer on. I have not looked in the BIOS setting yet because I'm not a real confident about looking around in a area on my computer where I could do something wrong. Could I do any damage just looking around in the BIOS?

  8. If you're careful, and are just looking... no. But be careful about any changes you make as they could definitely affect your computers performance. The good part is its easy, and if you do start randomly changing settings aroung, most bios' let you exit without saving the changes. Pretty self explanatory usually. Also, if you do manage to not mess it up, most bios' come with a restore default settings which should get you back up.

You're not gonna learn unless you play around. I say go in, look at all the options, and you'll find your wake on ring setting. Good luck.
