I have read through as much of the advice as I can in the time that I have and have tried various things, but can I get my converted mpeg to SVCD title to play on my stand alone DVD player? No!

Here's the way I went about it:

    1) Converted and enccoed the file to SVCD using Nero 5.5.9.0

    2) Applied the "VCD header trick" using TMPGEnc-2

    3) Burned the file using Nero Express and selected SVCD

Now, it plays on my computer, although the quality of the picture is pretty bad, but it does not play on my DVD player. I put the CD in the machine, it registers it as a "CD" and not "SVCD" as I thought it would, it allowed me to play it, but nothing! No sound, nopicture, but the machine is playing ita nd counting up the minutes that pass.

Can someone suggest another way, or correct what I am doing wrong?

    Many thanks in advance.

  2. First, item 1, how do you convert and encode to mpg using nero? or do you actually mean using Tmpgenc?

Second, some player won't play SVCD, or SVCD with header trick, so what is your model of standalone DVD player?

first of all, the vcd header trick doesn't work for all players.
second of all, did you check the compatibility of your player?

@tom28--Nero can encode, it just does a piss poor job.
@Mazo: try following one of these guides instead:

    Sorry, I didn't explain properly.

First of all I encoded the file using tmpgenc, not Nero as I first suggested. Doh!

I then applied the header trick, and then burned the file using Nero express wizard. I told the wizard I wanted to make an SVCD and it went about it process of encoding the file and then burning it to disk. Could this be what the problem is? The fact the it re-encodes the file before burning it?

FYI - My DVD player is a Pioneer DV-626. It plays VCD's no problem.

    Thanks for you help.

  5. Leting to re-encode by nero introduces problem with quality, not playability. To not let re-encode You must supply file muxed properly for SVCD (or burn XSVCD).
Another thing and more important : Your player (like most) is reported NOT to play SVCDs.

I use the encoder trick also for my svcd mpeg2 files. and i use nero to burn.

When you burn in nero dont select to make an svcd disc. that is why you put the header trick on the file. to make it a vcd when its actually and svcd.
Select in nero to make a vcd. uncheck the make compliant disk box, or if you use the wizard it will tell you that the file is not compliant, select the option to make non compliant vcd.

now you will have a vcd that will play in your dvd player , but it will in fact actually be playing an mpeg2 svcd file.
