I am new to this. I have avi files i want to convert to either mpeg or vcd. What is the best free converter out there. Can i even converte avi files to mpeg or higher. I want a good quality so i can watch it on my dvd player hooked up to my TV. what is a good site to download dvd movies from. I get some from winmx but they come up on my computer screen small. I want to be able to convert them to better quality so i can watch on my tv.

Try TMPGEnc, thats a pretty good one for beginners. Also have a look at the tools section on the right, and look under encoders, you'll find all you need there.

Firts, read the Newbie Guides.
The best shareware converter I have seen is TMPGEnc. You can convert to MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 for the first 30 days. Then only to MPEG-1 unless you find a utility to trick it to do MPEG-2 again.
To make VCDs, you convert your files to MPEG-1 while using a template in TMPGEnc. Then use your burner to author them to VCDs. Beware, your DVD player may not play home made VCDs, so check the database at left.
I do not know where or how to download DVD movies.
Finally, The quality you receive your is usually the best you will make them. If you follow the filter settings here, you can decrease the loss of quality during conversion.Hello.
