  3. as for putting .vob's on a disc and getting it to play, that's next to impossible. most dvd players even distinguish between CD and DVD discs, and by the ISO and UDF filesystems.

burning a VCD correctly without something to properly set it up isn't too far behind. the physical location of the files/folders/tracks is important, and it is a mixture of Mode 1 XA and Mode 2 tracks. it's not impossible to do, it's just not worth the effort. just download the nero demo, or a freeware solution

Patrick's right. If you're referring to not having to use the VCD mode in Easy CD Creator, or Nero to burn the cd, well, no, technically, you don't need to burn it in the VCD modes of the burning program. What you can do is burn it to a CD from an image file, using the general burning section of the program.

In this case, you need to create an image file of your mpg so it can be loaded in your burning program. You need an authoring program, such as I-Author or CDMage, in order to create these image files for the burning programs. In this case, the authoring program creates the folders. These are needed because your DVD player is programmed to look in certain places on your disk in order to identify and play the files.

Personally, unless you're after extra features in your VCD not offered by your burning program, it's more trouble and time than if you went through the process with the burning program in the beginning.
