Lots of programs will do it in multiple steps. That's partly what this forum is about. Some tools are better than others and some are simpler to learn.
Read the left panel and look for how to guides.

If you are new and want something simple, try a freeware program called DVDx. The latest version is 2.0. It does it all in 1 step and if you want, you can also choose to make an mpeg file instead of avi. If you have the right codecs installed you can compress the avi using the divx or other compression codecs.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

  3. Virtual Dub is probably your best bet for further investigation, but
as gll99 said, there are lots of programs out there such as DVDx etc.

  4. Newbie again...Question: once you rip and use DVD2AVI, you end up with certain files. Ifthey are in AVI format, why do I convert to MPEG. Is AVI better? If I use Vdub what are the steps required to put the audio and video files together to make the entire movie? In an AVI format, can I burn a VCD?

    Thanks

  6. @ truffles:

DVD2AVI can work in two ways. In one it acts as "pretend avi file maker"
by reading a mpeg-2 video, and serving indvidual frames to another application as if they were an AVI video. In the other (less useful) way,
DVD2AVI can convert an mpeg2 video into a split audio AVI file.

Using DVD2AVI in making A VCD or SVCD is just one of many possible methods and steps you can use. In all cases, however, the final file format has to be in mpeg because that is what VCD uses. You cannot
burn an AVI to VCD - either youself or your software (like nero) has
to convert it to the correct mpeg video and audio format.

Read the left panel and look for the how to guides.

    @ digitaledge:

Once of the reasons I do not use DVDx is because I was not
    happy with the picture quality.
