    Welp,

I used to capture analog avi video with Win98se, huffyuv, and avi_io all the time at yyyx480. Now with windows XP, it seems that i can not capture video above 320x240. That will drop every other field and I don't want to allow that.

I've got a good ol hauppauge wintv pci, and using wdm drivers (better then vfw they say ) and AVI_IO ready to capture from my VHS player. I like to capture plain ol avi, edit if i want, and convert to SVCD. I can handle everything after the capture, but i'm confused why "upgradeing" to windows XP "newer" and "better" and "happier" stuff seems to be giving me probs. I'm mean after all people.....how can microsoft products be letting me down? Oh crap, my sarcasm detector overloaded....

Oh well. I'm grateful for any advise.

  2. An upgrade from Win98 to XP is the problem. You have lots of old files on your hard drive, that needs to go. Try to uninstall all the old drivers, and install the new WDM drivers. Otherwise, I would suggest a fresh install of XP.

  3. Why don't You capture in MPEG with WinTV2K? Having PVR means, Your card will give MPEG out anyway and .avi i just real-time re-encoding.

I use the btwincap drivers, and turn off preview before capture and I get 720x480 full speed with MJPEG compression.

    No problems here.

  6. Last time I checked, AVI_IO is a VfW program and does not work directly with WDM driver. I believe it uses a VfW "wrapper" when it communicates with the WDM driver. I believe one limitation of the wrapper is 320x240 max capture resolution.

So there is no solution, except to email the author of AVI_IO and lobby for WDM support. I had to abandon AVI_IO for this reason. It would be a shame to see this product get left in the dust because of the move to WDM.

There is one capture program I know of that works with WDM driver, that program is called iuVCR (www.iulabs.com ).

SatStorm: I see you have a WinTV like me, but you say that you use Win2K. Can you please tell me what software, drivers, etc that you are using to do analog captures above 240 lines? Thank you.

snowmoon: I am not familiar with mjpeg. I have always used huffyuv. I have found a few PIC MJPEG codecs from the tools section, but they look very expensive. Which one(s) do you recoomend, to use for analog capture yyyx480 in WDM / win2K?

skittelsen: I am sorry that I was not more clear. Yes, this winXP install was from scratch. Perhaps i should try win2K?

Question, does WDM come from the OS or is it from the driver supplied by the manufacturer for whichever OS?

Thank you for your advise everyone.

btwincap drivers support vfw applications through the wrapper at full resolution ( 720x480 ).

I use the PIC MJPEG since I've had it since back when it was basicly free for personal use.

  10. I have a WinTV PCI, and run WindowsXP. Using the BTWincap drivers and AVI_IO I can capture up to 720x480 using either huffy or Pic MJpeg codecs.

Using the Hauppauge drivers I was limited to xxx by 240. WDM apps get full res either way.

  11. So when you install the BTWincap drivers, the VFW wrapper is built in so that I can use Avi_io or Virtualdub to capture under Win2000/XP at 720x480 resolution?
