My Pioneer DV-344 DVD player's manual says I can change NTSC playback to PAL (and vice versa). I followed the procedure in the manual that lets you set the signal playback of your choice. But the problem is: say I want to play an NTSC DVD as PAL, so I follow the procedure to set the DVD player to play as PAL and the word 'PAL' appears on the display window. But when I load an NTSC disc and start playing it, it plays in it's original NTSC signal instead of PAL.

The same problem happens if I want to play a PAL DVD as NTSC -- I set the signal playback on my DVD player to NTSC, but when a PAL disc is inserted and loaded, it's played in it's original PAL signal instead of NTSC.

What's the problem here?

For the record, the method used to set signal playback is: switch the DVD player into standby. Then hold down the Forward button on the player itself and press the Standby/On button on the player itself. You do this until either PAL or NTSC appears on the display window.
