1. Hello, new to this place, I'm such a newbie with video editing. I've tried to find another thread with information I need but couldn't find any.

I'm using AsfTools v3.1 I'm trying to convert asf to avi (obviously ) but I need to reencode first, when I try to do that it gave me this message.

"The Mark In time should be greater than 0 and less than Mark Out time."

What does it mean? how do I get rid of it?

Thank to all that will help

2. Ok, I try converting the file using VirtualDub 1.3c but it gave me an error as well.

First one is
"ASF validity check warning"
"ASF file is 246675545 bytes long, but was originally 1045 bytes when encoded. It may have been truncated or corrupted. Open file anyways?"

I click yes then it gave me this message
"VirtualDub Error"
"Couldn't locate decompresser for format 'wmv2' (unknown)"

I did download Microsoft/windows media codec 7.1, I found out about it when I was reading the faq in AsfTools site. But it didn't work. Is there another decompresser I should download?

Please help.
Some of those ASF files are pigs
You may need "Graphedit" , a little more complicated to set up, but does a good job, even if you have mostly junk frames.

TMPGEnc also reads ASF and can output put AVI's File > Output to file > AVI

4. I am trying to use Graphedit too, but it didn't work, I used this guide http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/wmv2avi.html. I seem to be missing "Wav Dest" in the filter part, so I couldn't use Graphedit.

I'll try TMPGEnc, I hope it will work this time. But it would still be great if someone could figure out the problem with my first post.

Thanks

5. Ok, I tried TMPGEnc, it didn't work When I try to load the asf file it said file can not open, or unsupported.

I need help, i'm running out of ideas!!
Please help if you know what to do.

TMPGEnc should have loaded it, I'm thinking you have a locked codec belonging to M$ Try Installing the Nimo codec pack.

http://nimo.everwicked.com/ http://perso.wanadoo.fr/nimo/

However here is GraphEdit settings

1) Use the File->RenderFile menu option to load in a file.

2) Remove the last two "filters" (or software components) from the graph. These default to your sound card driver and your video card driver. We don't want that, we want to convert to a different file format.

We'll do AVI, because that's what you'll want if you're using AVI editors to edit the movie.

1) Use the File->RenderFile option and choose your ASF file (can use WMV, etc)

2) The default graph is built for you

3) Delete any filters after (but not including) the Windows Media Audio Decoder filter

4) Delete any filters after (but not including) the ASF ICM Handler filter

5) Insert a new filter (Graph->InsertFilters) called "AVI Mux" from the DirectShow filters section

6) Link the ASF ACM Out to XForm In of Windows Media Audio Decoder

7) Link XForm Out of Windows Media Audio Decoder to Input 1 of AVI Mux

8) Link ASF ICM Out to Input 2 of AVI Mux.

9) Insert a new filter called "File writer" from DirectShow section and choose a file name

10) Link the AVI Out of AVI Mux to the In of your file writer

11) Right-click the AVI Mux filter and choose Properties

12) Choose the Full option of the Interleaving section and click OK (this makes the sound and video match up and is the whole point of the AVI format)

13) Press the play button

14) Wait until the play button is active again - this means the thing is finished (you can right-click on AVI Mux and look at the Current Position and Duration count to see how far in seconds the conversion has progressed during the conversion)

7. It still didn't work, I'll explain.

When I read the message, I went and started downloading the nimo build 8, but the download was slow, so I started on your guide anyway. Everything went great, I got to step 13, I started waiting and checking on the progress every so often. After a while the progress stopped. It stopped at 1:11 seconds, Graphedit seems to have just stopped encoding I don't know why, so I deleted the output file and tried it again.

This time The nimo build 8 was finished downloading, so I closed Graphedit and went to install nimo. I chose the 'basic' instal type, When it was installing I saw this error "error opening file and writing 'msvcr70.dll'". I pressed ignore and it went installing fine. I went back to Graphedit and did the instruction you kindly provided. This time I left the computer on overnight, cause the first time I did this it took a long time to encode; 1:11 seconds.

I came back, check the progress and found the encoding stopped at 1:11 seconds. That was like 20 minutes ago. I uninstalled the nimo, restarted, install nimo again, but this time, using 'full' install type. When it was installing the same error message appears, "error opening file and writing 'msvcr70.dll'". I clicked ignore again and it installed fine the rest of the way. Afterwards I went straight to Graphedit. This time I couldn't even open any video file using 'render media file'. When I try to do it it gave me "DirectShow SDK Filter Graph Editor has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I also tried the other programs that said it could go from asf > avi but they give me the same error as I said in earlier posts.

We're getting close! but not close enough
More help will be greatly appreciated.

Well I guess "msvcr70.dll" was in use and it could not be over written, They do recommend you uninstall all other codec's before you install Nimo. This prevents problems like you had, but also makes sure you get all the hacked ones instead of the original locked codec's.

You may have reached a point in time, where your system is in a right mess, only a fresh install might cure it The dll sounds like it belongs to Microsoft Visual Studio.

It does sound like this ASF has too many problems to edit/convert
Quote Quote
9. mmm ok... How do I remove all the other codecs safely? The only thing the nimo site said was to remove them from add/remove but some of them aren't in there.

Thanks for the help so far.
Can you restart in safe mode, then they wont be loaded, then install Nimo V 5.8 New !!
Quote Quote
11. Ok, I just tried that, it didn't work. I restarted and went into windows xp safe mode. (I uninstalled nimo 5.8 before that) Installing in safe mode went fine, I did a full install, I didn't see the error message like I did when I installed it in normal xp. I went back normal xp, ran ALL the programs that can convert asf to avi, but they all gave me the same errors as if I instsalled nimo in normal windows.

I'm trying to use AsfTools 3.1 to convert the file, it looks like it's the best way, but when I try to reencode the asf file it said I need windows media encoder 7.1, I had it installed, but then it would give me this message, "The Mark In time should be greater than 0 and less than Mark Out time."
Do I download the one in microsoft website or do I find some sort of cracked version? (I have windows media encoder 7.1 uninstalled)

If you re-install Media player, then you may need to re-install Nimo again, well XP is not the best for what your trying to do.

Microsoft update is as good as any place to get it.

17. Getting it isn't the problem HEHE but I would have to do tons of things to get it ready for win98se. If there are no other ways then I will replace 98 with 98se. Is there a way to do this with 98?

Yes you put the 98SE disk in and your Windows 98 will say that a newer version has been detected on the disk... Do you wish to upgrade ??

Say "YES"

You wont loose your programs, but I would do a fresh install, not an upgrade.
Quote Quote
19. I know you can do that, but wouldn't a clean install of win98se be better than a upgraded win98se?

Hi, No don’t use any chat programs regular. I'm sure you will be pleased with the difference between 98 and 98SE, don’t forget to visit Microsoft update when you have finished.

23. mm... if i were to replace 98 to 98se i'll have to do it tomorrow because else i will have to wait til next week, i hate installing OS, takes so long, but i'll do it. (i have 98se now)
Quote Quote
24. Bah, So if i want reinstall 98 to 98se i would have to reinstall xp too (dual boot if you didnt remember)
but my friend said 98se is the same as 98+all patches in windows update.

Not at all, 98SE is much better than 98, no matter how many patches you use, it wont be the same.

If you boot to 98, wont 98SE install just in that partition ?
Quote Quote
26. I dunno, I'll have to ask my friends.
Quote Quote
27. I asked my friend, you can't do that, 98 does stuff when you use xp OS, i can only install 98se if i uninstall xp and 98. Which i cant because that takes too long. any other way around this?

Don’t know, never tried it The boot disk is the problem. If the partition was switched off ?
Can Norton Ghost be used to backup the XP partition ?

How did you install 98 and XP in the first place ?

Will the world come to and end if you got rid of XP all together

If you have a second drive, use Norton Ghost to make a backup of everything, then format c and install 98SE, if your not happy with it you can always go back..

29. I formated the hdds, then set partitions, then boot with 98 and installed it, after that i boot with xp CD, installed it into the other partition.

I can't ghost it because i dont have enough room on my computer to store the ghost.

I can't uninstall xp because i use it everyday. It will take a long time to install everything, i don't have the time anymore.

Replacing the OS to convert a video clip?!?!? Thats a little drastic isn't it? Have you tried uncompressing the a/v streams with Media Encoder then re-encoding with TMPGEnc?

It may take a lot of HDD space (about 240Mb/minute) but its a lot less ******* around.
