I recently bought a new system and am still configuring things. I have the Hauppauge PVR250 and it works quite well with the included "WinTV 2000" and "WinTV 32" programs. I can view TV, capture directly to MPEG, etc.

I would like to use this card with VirtualDub and a program called "Snapstream" however whenever I launch virtual dub and choose "Capture" I get the following error:

    Video device already in use
You cannot use this device when another video application, such as DVD, video conferencing, video editing, TV viewers, or WebTV for Windows is already using it. To use this device for your current application, close the application that is using it. If WebTV is installed and running on your system, pause "Web TV video and data services" on the taskbar tray by right-clicking its icon and choosing "Pause Services".

I of course made sure none of the WinTV stuff was running and even went so far as to check my processes to see if there was an invisible process running using this device.

Any suggestions? I also installed the Windows Wrapper thinking that might enable it but no luck...

  2. Try clicking <ctrl><Alt><delete> and look at what programs are running. Maybe something is using the card that you don't even know.

Sorry my web site is down rigth now but any this should help you.
Q: I'am having trouble getting 3rdParty applications to work with Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 250?.
A: 3rdParty applications need YUV video format the WinTV-PVR 250 only output MPEG2 in RealTime so applications like Dscaler, PowerVCR WinDVR, VirtualDub, ect ect will not work with this card, Only first WinTV-PVR model 880 can output YUV video format becuase it has BT878A on board as well Vision Tech Kfir1 MPEG2 encode chip the new WinTV-PVR 250 dosen't need a BT878A video decode.

    Thanks SHS.
I am actually interested in using SnapStream PVS with this card but again can not get it to work. Is there anything special I need to do to get this to work? Since it captures in windows streaming media I'm guessing I don't.

Secondly, is the .mpg file created by this card proprietary (like the ATI cards) or is it a true .mpg that you could burn to DVD (if DVD spec)?

    Thanks again!

Sorry not even SnapStream PVS will work with the PVR 250 and as for windows streaming media even SnapStream need YUV video format so only option is BT8x8 chipset.
For I know there is no hardware windows streaming media support on any card out there which as no ISO stardred.
Is mpg proprietary you ask no mpeg2 is not but mpeg2 dose reg a license in order to do development well in tell December 31, 2010 but not mpeg1 it open source.
Yes it a ture mpg that you could burn to DVD that what Ulead DVD MovieFactory is for you do know it DVD Authoring Software you can also do VCD and SVCD with MovieFactory.

The error you received is normally because you try to open 2 capture programs at the same time. You can't have WinTv running at the same time as Virtual Dub.

Thanks Fozzee but that doesn't seem to be the issue as I not only shut everything down, I also double-checked the running processes to make sure somthing hidden wasn't accessing the card. I think the Hauppauge card - because it has a hardware MPEG2 encoder can not capture to .AVI and therefore fails.

I am thinking this might not be that big a deal. The net-net of what I want to do is capture TV programs to SVCD and DVD. The Hauppage card can capture directly to both spec so I don't have to go through the tedious encoding.

Hauppage software isn't great though. SHS - do you know a better way to set up regular recordings? The WinTV software is VERY heavy and sometimes errors out. I'd rather set something up via batch if possible... skipping the WinTV software all together. Possible?

Fozzee did you even read what I wrote I say it agine NO 3rdparty applications will work Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 250/350 other then WinTV2000, Why this well that becuase the new PVR 250/350 only output MPEG streaming media format which dosen't output RAW DATA that need for AVI format like YUV, RGB, etc, etc 99.5% of thoses 3rdparty applications like PowerVCR and WinDVR can't read MPEG in REALtime Perview mode being there where base on RAW DATA output like YUV, RGB, etc, etc.

Sorry there no way by pass the WinTV2000 for now but that do have plan non GUI scheduled recording.
Yes there are some Third party scheduled software look on PVR forum under Third party software and my web site.

    Hi SHS
I obviously didn't read your post did I.!!!!
For some strange reason it wasn't there when I read the thread.
Beats me but its not my thread I was just trying to be helpful with the little knowledge I have. Which is obviously not comparible to yours. I was not aware this card would not work with these applications.
Like I said only trying to help.

Thanks SHS for all the info and your web site which will no doubt be very helpful over the upcoming weeks.

Question: Can I use command line functions to capture using the WinTV executable? So basically I could create a batch job to run a capture and save the file with today's date. I thought I read somewhere that this was possible... maybe I'm dreaming. Is WinTV2000 and the WinTV Scheduler my only option?

ALSO, the captured streams... are they on spec? So if I took an SVCD capture or a DVD capture would I be able to go directly to burn? ATI captures were in a weird format that basically was proprietery so it would have to be de-muxed then muxed. Is that the case with the Hauppauge?
