Is it true that you need a region-free DVD player to do this?
If so, how do you do it?

All you need is the macrovision removal code for your model of DVD playe,this then enables you too back up your DVDs onto VHS(providing your scart leads are connected correctly),check out 'VCD HELP', 'DVD HACKS' section this should solve all your problems.

The Cyberhome ADM512 has the facility to turn off Macrovision.
Its a great player and very cheap ie UK£100 US$150
