  1. This is my last ditch attempt to get the drive working before it goes back
Can anyone tell me how i find out if a disc has been finalised or not?
The burn goes without fail, but the disc is unreadable when you try and view it afterwards. Its a long shot, but who knows. Im sure i read somewhere the sony was having problems finalising discs.

  2. What burning program do you use? Nero clearly shows if the disc has been recorded successfully... You can use Nero to see additional disc information.

I had problems using this burner: it will write perfectly, but not read; I had to leave the unit as single in the IDE channel, and disable UDMA (in BIOS and Windows). Now it works fine, no coasters .

P.S.: Next time try to add more information to your post, so it will be easier to help. Which OS you use, burning program, IDE configuration...

  3. Sorry, ive posted so many msg`s i so many forums due to this writer, i dont know where i am anymore.
Win XP with SP1, latest bios, via drivers, firmware upgrade.
Record now max burns - media, but not image files (says they burn but unuseable)
Nero freezes when right at the start, even before burning when u try to write to - media in udma, it will however write in PIO mode, but with the same results as record now max.
The drive is on pri master. Ive tried all other ide configs, but this is the only way it will get even the bad results above.

  4. Have you tried with this unit as single device? I mean, no slave attached in the same IDE channel? Also a good quality 80-wires cable may help. I fear this is the only thing I know that could help . I've seen more people like you having the same problems with VIA chipsets, I had also problems with my MB (Ali MAGiK)... This unit definitely has a serious flaw in the IDE interface that conflicts with almost everything. Hopefully it's working fine on my comp, but no UDMA transfers.

  5. This is the only device on the ide channel. Its also been tested in my m8`s pc, no VIA....so that rules that out unfortunately!

It burns data fine, like drag and drop...but refuses to burn any form of image.

  6. Which media brand did you use? This drive is picky for cheap media.

  7. used the sony provided dvd+rw
    datawrite classic dvd-
    datasafe yellow/black top dvd-
and some real cheap shitty stuff.

I cant see how media can be the problem, if the burn is going fine.
