As I have recently discovered news servers, I am downloading more TV episodes. I want to convert divx formats to VCD. I made several conversions and am fairly comfortable with most of the basics and a few advanced steps.
I want to convert 45 min TV episodes to a higher resolution format.
My standalone DVD player doesn't support SVCD, but I can multiplex to make it work. It also supports XVCD. I have made some XVCD successfully as well.
I want to do my conversions with TMPGenc.
Here is my source info
Type: DivX |
Image Format: avi |
<------------------------------------------------------------------------->
| Lengths (min): 48:10 | | Quality: DVD |
| Size: 352 MB (369,352,704 bytes) | | Format: NTSC / Stereo |
<------------------------------------------------------------------------->
| Video resolution: 512x384x23.976 | | Audio Codec/Bitrate: AC3/ 192kbps |
| Video compression: DivX MPEG-4 V3 | | Audio Resolution: 48.00kHz
What should I convert to that will one look good, and two take the least amount of time? SVCD or XVCD pros, cons of each?
Please help.
All suggestions welcome.
Steve

I'm still fairly new to this game but I did three conversions from a divx
rip VCD,SVCD and an XVCD to be quite honest I'd go with the XVCD option as it takes a hell of a lot less time to generate the mpeg 1 at a VBR than it takes to generate an mpeg 2 at a CBR and to be totaly honest they are both much better than VCD but I can't spot the difference between SVCD and XVCD.
P.S.
I play them back in a cyberhome ADL 528 with no probs whatsoever
Hope I've been of some help. As vcdhelp has been an invaluable source of info for me cheers.KILL A MAN BE A MURDERER, KILL A THOUSAND BE A CONQUEROR, KILL EVERYONE BE A GOD ! -
What I suggest you do is make a test CD. Take a 5 minute clip, and encoded it using different resolutions and MPEG format to see which works best for you. Set the bitrate to something you will be using. For example I made a CD burnt with Nero with one clip encoded using MPEG1, and MPEG2, at 4 different resolutions, 352x240, 352x480, 480x480, 720x480. For me the best was 480x480 MPEG2, followed by the 352x240 resolution. The 720x480 looked good when there was not alot of motion but when things started moving there wasn't enough bits so it looked bad. The 352x480 (CVD) was the worst looking. You wouldn't think it would be but on the widescreen HDTV I used the CVD clip diagonals looked really jaggie probably cause of the strange pixel ratio dimensions. The 352x240 VCD resolution wasn't as sharp as the others but it didn't have the diagonal problems like the CVD did so it was much more pleasing to the eye. Overall thought the SVCD resolution still had the best quality at the bitrate I was going to use.
