  1. Sorry if this is a daft question but I'm new to all this.
I've downloaded an AVI which is encoded with 5.1 surround sound and I want to keep the 5.1 audio when I burn to DVD.

    File info is as follows - Sampling rate = 48000Hz / Channels = 5(Stereo) / Sample precision = 0-bit / Compression = Unknown (tag2000) / Preload Skew = 28000 samples (0.58s) / #of frames = 104353 / Min/ave/maxtotal frame size = 28/2335/28000 (238043k)

I want to use TMPGE to convert to MPEG and SpruceUp to author.

Here's the question ... I've done a small test and TMPGE is happy to convert both the video and audio without having to seperate the sound using VirtualDub... but will this keep the 5.1 audio when I finally author the new MPEG in SpruceUp?

Or.. do I have to do something else, like ripping the sound into an AC3 file and then multiplexing the video and audio back togeher??

Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks.

i dont know if spruceup can handle 5:1 ac3 files but supposing it did you would just extract the audio frm your source and use it as is in spruce -- you dont need to mux anything as the authoring program does it for you ...
and certainly dont use tmpgenc touch the file ..

what is channel= 5(stereo) supposed to mean anyway , its either 6 channels or its stereo (stereo can be 3 (or 2) channel btw with ac3 (stereo accually IS 3 channels but most people have forgotton that).. i guess they refer to 5 channel = 3/2 plus LFE ..

  3. BJ_M .. Thanks for the reply.

The file info I listed was taken from VirtualDub under [file information] and it does show '5 channels (stereo)'. Does this mean that the AVI is not actually 5.1 and is in fact just 2 channels normal stereo?
The AVI in question is "We were Soldiers" encloded with the XviD MPEG4 codec.

I have checked the SpruceUp help file and it says it can accept AC3 files but when I list the accepted file types it shows this -

*.m1v; *.m2v; *.mpv; *.vbs; *.mpg; *.mpe; *.mpeg; *.mp2; *.m2p; *.avi (MPEG); *.bmp; *.psd; *.tif; *.jpg; *.tga

So how do I get the file into SpruceUp if it's going to have an AC3 tag?

  4. Both your audio and video files must be identically named. Take this example:
Let's assume your .mpg is named "soldiers.mpg", then using Tmpgenc's Mpeg tools "demultiplex" function, demultiplex it to audio and video basic streams. They will be named like this:

    video: soldiers.m2v
    audio: soldiers.mp2 (or soldiers.ac3)

Just rename your .mp2 or .ac3 file to .mpa if Spruce can't load it as it is.
Import the "soldiers.m2v" file into your assets area.
The audio will be imported at the same time.

    That's it.
In this industry, Sadly, The future was yesterday.
