CD writing and compatibility is so easy an idiot could do it. Is DVD writing and compatibility there yet ? Is there a consensus that DVD -R is 80% compatible or is that arguable ? Is the writing software reliable ? How many hockey pucks will it take before I get consistent compatible DVD's ?

well you didnt say what your source is so ill tell you what i know dvd writing is much more involved but most mediums are easy to work with. i record from my digital mini in dv avi and burn straight to dvd no prob. dloaded movies etc must be encoded to dvd compliant mpeg 2 or compliant avi.
there are many good simple programs that are on this site and your best bet is to read the guides to the left on capturing then autoring. i burn dvd rs and sell them on ebey and ive sold over 50 and i have yet to have one compatability issue.i use only memorex dvd-r.
youll write a couple coasters but i bought a couple dvd rws and i practice with those.
if your of normal intel youll be burnin in a few days it depends on the source and your computer
