  1. I have successfully backed up approx 40 movies using DVD2SVCD. Never a problem or a coaster yet and perfect audio sync. Just tried ( twice ) to back up "Usual Suspects". The resulting audio badly out of sync. Same settings. The mpg itself is out of sync when tested with MP. Anyone had bad results peculiar to one DVD ?

I can only tell you that I have had similar problems on individual DVDs, I can't tell you why. I've done over a 100 back-ups with DVD2SVCD and I can think of 4 or 5 times the system has "hiccupped". The audio synch was off for me just last week on The American President. I also had DVD2SVCD tell me a file it needed somewhere during the process didn't exist, when it most certainly did. Also had two DVDs that wouldn't completely rip, would stop at a certain point; one of them was Disney's Alice in Wonderland. As for the synch problem, you didn't mention if you knew how to solve it. I just took the encoded audio file and the final full encoded video file and did a Simple Multiplex in TMPEGenc to make one large mpeg file. Then used the Tools functions, also in TMPEGenc, to cut the mpeg into the right number of pieces. Then I just burn the mpegs themselves onto discs.

Just curious - how did you rip Alice in Wonderland if it would stop at a certain point?

I didn't. I gave up and moved on to another DVD.

  5. These Problems arise from poor(or maybe clever) authoring of DVD's

They may do somthing like, make the move into 4 or 5 different program chains or offset the audio on one program chain to the video on another and other stuff like that.

So don't blame the software, blame the DVD authoring.

  6. For Usual Suspects try this:

    Open the IFO in Ifoedit
    Click VOB Extras
Setup a destination directory and leave the other checked defaults alone
    Click OK
    Select 2 through 13 leaving 1 and 14 unchecked
    Click Strip It

The result should now be able to be processed by DVD2SVCD with no audio/video sync problems.

I believe that is what worked for me. I screwed around with it for a while. Let me know if the above does not work. I may have another suggestion.

  8. hmm, I have a similar problem with The Insider. using DVD2SVCD. The movie rips fine and all appears well until the muxing, on the first mpeg it gets to 84% and freezes. If I escape it continues however the sound is missing from half the movie.

I am currently trying it using

SmartRipper, Dvd2Avi, tmpgenc, chapterXtractor and Vcdeasy

Had the same problem with a Stevie Nicks dvd (live at red rocks). Computer plays the mpeg2 without problems, my lenco dvd player gives a few seconds between sound and video. Used the smartripper etc. path, the svcd burned with nero) plays allright ..
