  1. Computer and monitor have been humming along for a couple years now, but over the past month, on a few occasions what has happened is:

CPU seems to go into sleep mode all by itself -- the monitor goes black, CPU power stays on, all HD activity ceases. Sorta like when the monitor goes to sleep, and all you need to do is hit any key to bring the monitor to life again -- only when this happens the monitor stays dead.

It only happened a few times during the past month, until this weekend, when it's now happening several times a day.

Are I overheating? (The weather has turned hot here in NYC.) Is it the power supply?

I'm running Panda Cloud 24/7, and have done a full scan with Cloud, with Malware Bytes, and with Super Anti-Spyware. Nothing bad found.

    Thank you!

1: Shut it down , remove power cord, remove side panel and remove dust biuld up.

What you describe is likely to be a few things by this stage.

1: Monitor stays dead = faulty gpu
2: Powering off = psu defect

After dust removal I would invest in silver artic 5 and replace the heat grease compound on your cpu, if it is over heating it can trigger these power of symptoms.

Retest then move onto testing gpu and psu for possible faults

  3. Thank you, BJS. Will do.

Just tried SpeedFan and the GPU at the moment is coming in at 89 degrees C. Yikes!

Wow, you can bake some biscuits inside your computer case. Yep, better take Bjs' advice.

  5. You bet, filmboss. Thanks.

SpeedFan also just told me that 1 of my 3 fans is dead. Guess we found the problem.
