  1. Hi all. So far I am capturing w/VirtualDub to avi, I can create a VCD with very good quality.

Now I want to add some special effects or cut/modify the scenes in the movie If I use a commercial program like VideoWave/ULead the output to VCD loses lots of quality (somewhat heavy squares and blur)

Is there a commercial package or settings that is recommended for these tasks?
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,

What Resolution and codec are you using for capturing the source file?

I've captured at 704x576 from a vhs in virtual dub using the huffy codec and used premiere to add some transition to put in some effects and then frameserved it to Tmpgenc and my end svcd came out good.

If you are capturing using heavy compression like divx or mpeg you will get crap quality. I definitely recommend using Huffy.

If your capturing at low resolution like 352x288 you might want to try capturing at higher resolution then try those programs for your effects.

If still looks crap it is probably those programs and should give Adobe Premiere a try.

Use Virtual Dub to Capture. Then using your chosen video edit to put those effects in do all or most the editing in one process in the editor then frameserve into Tmpgenc and do the rest to the final Mpeg.

If your capturing from VHS you might want to try creating and SVCD.

  3. Thanks for your reply TurboRunner

I am using the huffy codec too but the capture resolution is a lot smaller than yours, actually 352x240 (I guess that is the reason for the crapy output)
What puzzles me is that when I use the TMPEGEnc to produce the VCD from the 352x240 avi the quality of the VCD is good (at least I find it good, all is relative)

    A few questions.
What is the recommended capture size for the output being a VCD or SVCD?
Where can I get more info about frameserving?
Is Premiere the only one that you can frameserve?

    Thanks again

    Hi,

Sorry for not posting havn't been looking in the forums that often

are you still having problem with frameserving or you still need help?

When you are frameserving have no compression the editing program you are editing with since you are frameserving to a mpeg encoder there is no need to compress and file that is already going to be compressed by the mpeg encoder.
