  1. Hi,

I am coverting VHS tapes to eventual VCD/SVCD format. The VHS tapes were originally recorded in EP format (6 hrs per tape).

QUESTION 1: I first captured to AVI using Pinnacle Studio. The "best" default for capture quality sets the frame size to 320x240.

However, since the VCD output will have frame size of 352x240, should I not be caputuring at 352x240? What will happen if I convert a 320x240 AVI to 352x240 VCD?

QUESTION 2: Given the quality of my source video (VHS EP), would you recommend I output to VCD or SVCD?

Thanks in advance for your help.

keep it at 320x240 and add borders ..

encode a little of it in both svcd and vcd and see which you can stand the most

i suggest scale it to the resolution you want with tmpegenc.
but i think it's no use to create a svcd from such resolution.
    vcd should work fine.

  4. What I did when i backed up my copy of Speed from VHS to VCD was to capture
it with Virtualdub at 352x288, 25fps with 44khz stereo audio to a DivX AVI.
I used the Low Motion codec with the bit rate set at 3000 to produce the AVI file.

Then added the sharpen filter and framserved to the Panasonic Mpeg encoder v 2.30.

Then just cut the resulting MPG and burned to VCD with Nero.

    Resulted in a lovely job

it'd be better to cap to huffyuv for the vid compression over DivX since you're gonna VCD them. You don't want to compress it unless you have drive space reasons. See the top guide under CAPTURE (look <-)
