    was the avi type? ( divx, mjpeg, ... )
    was the audio compression used in the .avi?
    was used to convert the .avi to .mpg?
    was the template/setting used in the conversion?
    else did you do to the .mpg?

    You may have to de-compress the audio ahread of time using vdub ( open divx-vite in vdub, file/save wav ). Specify the .avi for the vid, .wav for the audio and encode as before.

    Without more info that's my best suggestion.
