    Hi,

I am trying to make a VCD excatly like the DVD meaning everything on the actual DVD. How can I do that? What software do I need? Where can I get it from?

  2. Look left, "how to..."

Keep in mind that the VCD format does not support many DVD format features that you would need in order to do what you want.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  3. VCDs do not support (from DVDs):
    • overlay text and graphics (e.g., most of the selectable highlights on a DVD menu or "removalbe" subtitles)
    • multiple video +/- multiple audio streams (for a VCD, you get one video stream + one stereo audio, for SVCD, you get one video + up to two stereo audio)
    • multi-angle or seamless branching
    • the directional (arrow) key presses
    • hot spots (except if you are using VCD under CD-i playback)
    • I'm sure that there are other things

This being said, if you know the limitations, you can often author clever tricks so that "most" of the material on a DVD can be make into a VCD format.

  4. If i give VCDImager some XML with buttons (hot spots) marked out in it, WinDVD and PowerDVD pick up the hot-spots. This allows you to click on things with the mouse.

But i've never seen any hardware only VCD player with a pointing device and cursor.

When making vcd menus u can make pretend arrows using the VCD number keys. For example, use 8: Up, 2: Down, 4: Left, 6: Right.
The lack of overlays problem can be overcome by pre-rendering another still with the overlay already on it.

  5. The only hardware devices that I'm aware of that can use the VCD hotspots are CD-i players.

    Good idea with the arrows!
