Why would anyone want to buy DVDs? (Or CDs for that matter?)

Haven’t our PCs far out performed the DVD and CD market? OK, I know I am drudging up some old, controversial topics but lets just really look at it. Why would anyone with a little computer knowledge and a high speed internet connection ever buy a DVD or CD? Or pay for HBO, etc.? We all know we can get everything out there on Grokster, (kZ, etc.) Yes we are downloading DivX AVIs or MPG4s / MP3s and yes they are not quite the quality of 7 gig mpeg2 or wavs but is the difference really worth free ( be it illegal) verses what they try to make us pay to by that crap? Especially when anyone with any kind of future vision would realize will be obsolete soon? Here is what I propose… When a new movie come out they should make it so you can see it on the big screen for $7, rent it for $5 or download the DivX for $3, ALL ON THE OPENING DAY!!! The movie industry gets mad that we can download Screeners or worse case scenario Cam-corder captures before the move opens but they don’t do anything about it!! If I could pay 3 bucks and download the movie at a 1.00 megabit speed I would do it for MOST of the movies I currently get at half the speed for free. The same is true for music, I don’t know about you but I haven’t bought a new CD in 3 years!!! Wouldn’t getting 3 bucks for a download of the “album” be better then nothing?? I guess it’s a numbers game, there are not enough of us that know how to do all this yet to justify that change in the market place. But mark my words, that is what they will end up doing! I just don’t want to hear the big companies complain about people downloading DVD rips and CD mp3s until they get with it! Any one want to ad to this thought???

This issue seems more like a philosophical musing on the problems in the entertainment industry rather than a technical conversion issue.

Don't get me wrong, the reason it stood out to me is because I used to choose forums based on who I wanted to respond, rather than follow the rules of whatever forum I was in. Now that I have been reprimanded by the mods I don't do that anymore.

OMG, I would spend $20 on a DVD and watch it on my 27" with 5.1 digital surround before I spend a dime on a f*cking DIVX. Overrated. Yeah, P2P is pretty sweet, but I would never give up my DVDs. It's also fun to actually LEAVE THE HOUSE once in a while and see a movie in a theater with friends... do you know what those are?

for many of us, it boils down to "how valuable is your time?" I looked for a fast and simple way to rip dvds to comparable quality (to dvd-r) and although I have an Athlon XP 1800 and 768 MB DDR (which, I must disagree with you, is NOT "one of the most "bad ass" setups on here!"), I am still dissatisfied with the 8-12 hours it takes me to do a rip. I simply take the amount of time I have to sit in front of my computer, divide it by the cost of the production dvd, and say to myself, "Is this worth the effort?" Usually not, so I only copy single layer dvds, which is fast and simple, and the few dvds that I wish to own that are dual, I just _buy_ them.

Hmm, I can see you are an economics master. Let them rent the movie or download the DivX for $5 or $3 so that they can distribute it to as many people they want instead of getting $7 a pop from each person. Then getting $5 off the rental by the same people then finally $15 for the DVD.

anyone saying they are accomplishing these settings on the system that you are so impressed with hasn't tried it yet. ask anyone whose opinion would actually matter.

The joke about the subtitles was that in America they dont display the chinese subtitles, but on the divx crap you download from Asia, there is subtitles.
