Here's a screenshot of a frame (in virtualdub) captured off a DVD movie through my Hauppage WinTV card (I don't have a DVD player in my computer so I could not rip it). I captured it at 640*480 with huffyuv

The frame looks quite blurry and I'm wondering if this is normal or bad? If it is bad what are the most likely causes of this blurryness? The main thing that bothers me is the horizontal lines you can see, at full speed in many of my captures these horizonal lines are noticable. The horizontal lines on the text on the guy's shirt are especially bad.

Take a look and give me your thoughts please.

There, this website should be more to people's liking. If you guys have a good free website service for uploading screenshots to, let me know please.

I didn't look at your pic but unless you have hacked the bios on your standalone DVD player when you hook it to your capture card, it will sense that you are connected to a device other than a TV and the copy protection software will kick in.

You can block macrovision from PC to TV using TVtool but I am not sure if you can block it from DVD to PC.

The only trick I know (except the bios hack) is to connect the DVD player to a much older VCR and then to your capture card. The older VCR did not have the sensing technology (I suspect its only a hardware contact on the pins). If it has RCA jacks you don't have to record on the vcr just use the in and out pins as a jumper to your capture card.

If its not macrovision then check your cables the shortest, best insulated gold tipped cables are recommended and keep them away from electrical fields, amplifiers, telephones, tv etc.. as best as you can.

If you have the room keep your capture card away from the other cards leave an empty slot put it at the bottom of your case away from the video and audio cards.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

Although I made a sincere effort to help with the problem I was suspicious as to an html link with that name so I didn't try it. I'm glad I didn't. There is no room for stuff like that here. Those popups actually defeat themselves cause even if you were interested in what they had to offer they cover each other up so fast they lock up the browser and you have to kill it anyway. The advertisers (even non porn sites) are being fooled. They are paying the web hosts for all these fake hits that no-one really sees.

postul8or: What was that all about????

Hmmm, the link worked fine for me last night when I created it. I'm not sure where these problems came from, I'll look into it. It might be that I called it index.htm instead of .html or something.

It was late last night when I made the post and I uploaded the picture to the only currently active webspace I've got which just happens to be bad for these pop-ups and such...I guess I'll work on finding some new free webspace, if anyone has some suggestions my ears are open.

I apologize for this mess but I do need to point out something ironic...I've got more people sending messages bitching and complaining about this broken link than I get when I ask civilized questions.

As far as these allegations about using a hacked DVD bios and stuff I'm not sure where that's coming from. I'm just playing the DVD in the DVD player as always, with the Video Out going to the video in on the capture card (ie with the double ended RCA jack "composite" cable) and it plays just like it's on a TV. I didn't pull any tricks here, my DVD player is as-is from the store. I recall when my friend tried to record a DVD on his VCR that it was very scrambled, like just bands of colors on the screen or something. My problem is not at all similar to this, the picture looks normal but (especially) when things move fast there are horizontal lines coming off of some objects. To me it's more about the drivers and or quality of operation of my card. Perhaps also settings for the Huffyuv capture stuff that I'm doing.

I'll get the link fixed tonight and hopefully we can put this broken link junk behind us and look at the screenshot.

  6. You SHOULD hack into your DVD player to disable Macrovision. It's commercial copy protection, same one that keeps you from copying VHS's from new videos. Look up your DVD player on this site, and see if it can be hacked. If that doesn't fix the blurriness, you atleast overcame one hurdle. Otherwise, I dunno how to answer your question. Good luck.

This blurryness is not due to the DVD player alone. It occurs when I record off of a VHS tape or straight from cable tv. Maybe I'll post a movie clip sometime and just ask an open ended question "what do you think about the quality of this video clip" and see what people say about it.

I would also be interested in uploading a video clip and asking people if I used the right settings on my noise reduction filters and etc.

Is this problem due to interlacing?
