When I capture in videostudio it forces me to capture in type 1 video. Is this a codec and am I losing anything with this type 1 video scheme. I would like to capture using the huffyuv but can not with my firewire card.

There is no loss in quality between Type 1 or 2 AVI. I cant give you a technical breakdown of the two types, but they both capture equally well.
As for VideoStudio, I am pretty sure it will not allow you to use any compression codec (ie Huffy or PICVideo), besides the one that is comes packaged with its software. Also, I believe VideoStudio captures uncompressed AVI, so therefore no Huffy or PICVideo supported.
If you want to capture compressed AVI and save yourself some disk space, try:
VirtualDub or AVI/IO and remember to download the compression codec HuffyUV and/or PICVideo.
One thing I just thought of. I believe VirtualDub does not support Firewire capture.
