Hello all.
I'm new to this forum, and to capturing, but not new to PC's. I'm trying to get my ATI AIW 8500dv to capture using their purple breakout box, and Adobe Premiere 6. Adobe is telling me that something else is using my ATI capture stuff. I've checked on everything and nothing is using it that I know of. I don't have the TV crap enabled.
Can someone help me? I'm using a VCR to dump a VHS tape in hopes of making a DVD.
Thanks.
Heath

I've seen a few problems like this posted on here. It's strange that no one has come up with/posted a message stating a fix for it. I'm going to continue looking and try and find something and if I do, I'll make sure I post it.

I have the 8500DV and have never had that problem with the 8500DV., but it is a common problem. Typically it comes from something that WAS using the connection and has left a windows process running in the background. If you are running a Windows NT kernel you can sometimes find and kill the individual process, but this often times leaves the system unstable. I have found for best capture you usually want to do a fresh reboot before starting the capture. On older systems that had accumulated a lot of junk programs and drivers I would sometimes have to create a "clean boot" setting which only loaded the programs and drivers I needed. With the newer operating systems creating a clean boot is getting harder and harder to do. I have finally broken down and set up a box that is pretty much dedicated to capture and I purposely don't put much else on it. With that I have found that the error you mentioned along with a host of others have gone away, plus my dropped frames rate has dropped to essentially nothing on a clean source.

Thanks for the reply.
This is a brand new system. I built it pretty much for this reason. I can't see anything else that would be using the card. The only other thing I can think of is the IRQ sharing of both the V-card and the NIC. That could be potentially the problem, but I have yet to go back and pull the NIC to see if this is it.

Also you might try a completely fresh driver install. ATI is notorious for leaving bits and pieces of their drivers here and there. I would recommend going to Rage3d.com and following their uninstall instructions and see if that cures your issues...it cured mine.

Macros has a good suggestion. I'd probably try updating the drivers first, see if that helps. If not, delete the install and the drivers then re-install.
I didn't have problems with residual stuff as much as other crap which was trying to use the card. If I remember correctly yahoo IM was notorious for trying to turn on the camera and tying up the WDM capture driver. The other thing that seemed to want to auto load was a VCR program but that was with an old WIN-TV card if memory serves. That does remind me of another source of that error. I think anything using the WDM capture driver creates a problem. Examples are webcams and so on. -
That's what I don't understand about this. This is a fresh system. There is nothing on it that should be trying to activate the port or drivers. The only two things that *Might* be it would be AOL and AIM. Neither of which have video features. I'm going to try that crappy MMC software tonight, at ATI's request. If that doesn't work, I'm going to pull out my NIC and see if it was an IRQ related issue. IF that turns out not to be it, I'm stumped again.
Just for my own sanity, the RCA connectors should be going from the Out on the VCR to the side of the purple box with the DV conncetion, correct? ATI doesnt' really lable the box in or out. SOmeone on the Rage3d.com site said to have the sound go to the audio card, for better sound. I figured I'd worry about that later. I just want to get this working first, then worry about quality.

Hello,
Many people claim that ati's software sucks, that is the only software for capturing I have ever used and my vcd's are very nice and captured in real time. Another person who many many people turn to for advice becasue of his very nice vcd's,svcd, minidvd's, and now dvd's also swears by ati's program and it's real time captures. Once everything is setup correctly it works very nice. Just make sure you have all the updated drivers and such and you should be fine.
On another note every little things effects video capturing. So if I was you I would shut down everything except what is absolutley needed. When i was using my old computer for capturing(aiw 128) I would disconnect my cable modem and reboot that way nothing was using any resources.
I tried premeir when I first started capturing a coupel years ago and found the program to be over complicated and unable to do what I watned it to do and I could never get it or virtual dub to recognize my capture card. I know use only ati's mmc 7.7 to captrue and womble to edit my captures, then nero to burn my vcd's and svcd's
