"Cannot Play" newly-created VCD on Sony DVPNC615

After reading and performing the Newbie's guide on Divx to VCD conversion and burning my first VCD on a Memorex CD-RW (which I was able to view the movie by selecting the "dat" file and playing on Windows Media player), I received a "cannot play" message on my Standalone DVD player. My Sony says it can play cd-r/rw and mpegs, but I can only get music CD's to play. My VCD has the 4 file folders that VCDeasy created. What file is my sony looking for? An .mpeg file? Did I miss something in the VCD creation process? Do I need to convert the .dat file to an .mpeg file? PS-I just got the DVD player today, so I'm really new to this!

Use TMPGEnc to convert your AVI, load a VCD template (PAL or NTSC) then the output will be correct for making a VCD later.

Your player looks like the 5 disk version of the NSP400 with 5.1 out, it does say it supports CDR/CDR -W / CD, but for the life of me I cannot find anything that says it plays VCD ?... Ah yes I just spotted it on a zoom of the picture

Just for kicks, I went to Circuit City and took my CD-R/CD-RW with me and put them in an Apex AD-5131 and darned if they didn't just start playing like they should!! I also tried them in a Samsung and got the same good results. Now I'm wondering if the BRAND of CD's wouldn't read in the Sony. If anyone has any suggestions as to brand, I'm up for it. I would prefer to keep the Sony, but I can't deny that the Apex is the one working for me as of now!!

Well I use nothing but Maxell 16X CD-80 XL and burn at 24X I have also used 40X with no problems.

I have a sony DVP535 model and spent a month making vcd coasters.
The disks that work perfectly for my machine burnt at 2x up to 24x are:
CD/Rs Princo and Pyrod. They have a blue/silver layer format.
CD/RWs Verbatim are the only ones Ive tried and worked perfectly each time burnt at the maximum of 4x
I too considered selling the sony, but once I found the correct medium I wouldnt entertain that thought. Im am impressed at the XSVCD specs I can make and play with this machine, I have made such movies up to 5000bps, very nice, pity about how much can fit on one disk though.

The Sony's are very particular about the brand of media. Check out topics relating to other Sony models. There's some kind of Circuit City brand that plays... maybe that and the Verbatim are the same? I'm not too sure.

My DVP-S530 only plays CDRWs, and apparently a select few CDRs... but alas no SVCD support. I picked up a cheap Apex and hacked the firmware. So now I have a region-free DVD player slash SVCD player. The Sony definitely kicks the tar out of the Apex as far as DVD playback, but I don't have an extra $400 to blow on another Sony player that supports the new formats just yet.

Anyways, the gist of this is: yes, the brand of media may actually make all the difference.
