  1. Hello!

I have an annoying problem when exporting captured DV (premiere) to AVI and then converting to SVCD (TMPGEnc). Now the last part won't work because TMPGEnc can't open the source video file.

Could someone please tell me the right settings for capturing with Premiere, exportin with Premiere and converting to SVCD with TMPGEnc?

Other problem is that I have an NTSC camera, but I'd like the result to be PAL. That's not the most important thing, but it would be nice.

    Thanks for the answers, Beorn

  2. Older version of TMPGEnc did not accept type1 (DV) avi. Perhaps that is your problem.

  3. Just a minute ago I tried the latest version of TMPGEnc and I still have the same problem: TMPGEnc can't open the AVI file exported from Premiere as an Microsoft DV AVI

    Help me, please!

  4. Perhaps you will get better results by converting the type 1 DV file into a type 2 DV file.

See this link for the Ulead DV converter:

I had to install a DV Codec to open DV in TMPGEnc
    www.vcdhelp.com/tools#codecs
but you maybe already have done that.

And you find a dv type converting tool here also
    http://www.dvideohome.com/canopus_dv.htm
and also some nice dv guides.

  6. Baldrick,

Which DV codec did you install? The Canopus or the Mainconcept one? Is there a difference?

    Thanks,

  7. I had the same problem.
Someone at a newsgroup gave me an advice :

    - Search with google for : avic.exe
    - Download it somewhere, first hit works for me.
    - Open AVIC.EXE when download's completly
    - Click on the yellow Enveloppe to browse to your DV/AVI file.
    - Switch "S" with "V" in the FourCC Description Code.
    - Click on APPLY and Quit.
    - Open it with TMPGEnc.

It works great with me. Sorry for the bad English.
Good luck, please let me know if it works or not.

I capture using a RT-2500 via Premiere; yes, it's in DV (from analogue source though, but that doesn't matter btw).

Somehow I cannot export the avi from Premiere directly : it ends up in some weird error as soon the 2GB barrier has been reached, although I've got NTFS5 and the capturing in Premiere works fine into 1 large avi file (1 movie is about 22GB - 2files, 1 for the video and 1 for the audio).

Comming to your problem, I solved my problem by using VirtualDub via which I slice the avi into pieces so I only got very small pieces of avi which I master in premiere (mostly begin - end pieces of an avi).
Finally I use VDub again to create 1 large file, which will contain the results from the mastering in premiere and the originals from capturing.

The resulting avi (and seperate wave file), I give it to TMPGenc directly (I use version 2.57 which gives the best quality for DV - yet) and encode to VCD or SVCD but always am checking that TMPGenc will encode into Interlaced (top first) when I'm creating SVCD. VCD always is progressive encoding (non-interlaced) - meaning that TMPGenc will de-interlace automaticly the DV.

Anyhow, I know there's a problem with Premiere because I cannot launch the Ligos encoder from within it (same problem as yours). That's why I came up with this solution.
It takes some more time, but I'm happy with the result (and that's what's counting).
