  1. This is really a playing issue on my PC. I capture Hi-8 and VHS at 352x480 using VirtualDub on my Radeon 64 vivo, mjpeg set to 2 fields if > 240 lines.

My regular PC desktop shows full on the TV screen at 800x600, but playing through any application (e.g., Media Player) the image on the TV and monitor has black space above and below. I suspect there are not enough lines to fill the TV screen.

Would capturing at a higher horizontal resolution fix this? If so, what's a good resolution to try?

No, your TV-Out is adding overscan to the image. You will need to figure out how to turn off overscan if you want the image to truly fill the TV.

  4. Thanks, I tried tweeking the monitor settings in the display control panel. In particular, I tried stretching and moving the monitor image, while watching the TV screen. It had limited effect during playback, and there is no underscan/overscan setting I can see.

Again, my desktop shows fully on the TV, so it must be either the application or the AVI I'm trying to view.

Just as a note, I have to do this with the monitor running at 800x600 @60Hz which is a 4:3 aspect ratio. My AVI is 352x240 which is 4:2.72. Could it be that my card is trying to keep the 4:3 aspect ratio by adding the requisite lines to the top and bottom?

Yep, get yourself zoom player or other flexable media player. Sasami 2k is in the DVD players section under SVCD ( don't know why ) seems to work well.

WMP only allows .avi's to be 1:1 ratio so it would screw it up.
