I'm new to ripping DVD's and apologize for the dumb question but.....

I ripped my first DVD last night, Antitrust, and it worked perfectly. The step by step guide was tremendously helpful and went without a hitch. The file, however, is 1.2 gigs. What is the most efficient way to either rip or convert a file to one that will fit on one cd? thanks in advance for you help.

  2. The only dumb question is the one you know the answer to
It's all about Bit rate man. Lower the bit rate and you'll have smaller files. What is the format of your final 1.2GB file, Mpeg-1 ?

I see said the blind man!

Okay, so i used the bitrate calculater to determine what BR i needed to set TMP to in order to fit on 1 cd. I am currently making Mpeg 1 files. Will this be read but most DVD players? I was going to make an Mpeg 2 but jeez, like 15 hrs to do that process.

What's the recommended format to have your cd's read by DVD players? AVI, Divx, Mpeg 1, Mpeg 2? I keep hearing confliciting info on this.

thanks for your reply, i really appreciate it!

  4. Depends on your DVD player. Check the compatibility table on this forum.
SVCD (mpeg2)generally gives better quality as long as the average bit rate is high enough, say >1500kps. The bitrate calculators are generally for SVCD using 2pass VBR.

The wait is worthwhile, because you get better quality and smaller file sizes.( Encode while your in bed or out !).

You should reckon on approx 1cd per 1 hr movie

  6. DVD players wont play avi's. You have to convert this into VCD or better SVCD format. TMPGenc is a popular encoder, and there's guides on this site.
Popular method is - Smartripper ( to generate VOB files) , DVD2AVI ( to generate audio wav file and project file) TMPGenc ( to encode audio with DVD2AVI project file and create SVCD compliant mpeg2)and burn onto CD-R using Nero .

    PS: 1 hr to 1CD was using 80min CD-R
