Alba DVD 108

I have bought the above DVD player and was wondering if anybody can shed some light on a problem I have, it says on the DVD player it supports VCD/SVCD/CDR & CDRW but it doesnt, I have tried various different makes of CDR and they wont work. What do I need to do apart from smashing it with a sledgehammer

My cousin recently purchased an Alba, not sure if it is the same model but it did say it would play CD-R etc but doesn't. Try CD-RW, they worked fine for him just a little more expensive.
