  2. They aren't encrypted, so just convert the DAT file to MPG (link to the left, "how to convert")
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

Do a disk to disk copy, then you can say you it was a rip

  4. Or if you mean "rip" as in "extracting all the data", then your best bet is to do extract the VCD as a CUE/BIN image with CDRWin and then use VCDXRIP (in the VCDImager package) on it.

It will extract all the sequences and segment items as well as create an XML descriptor file of the PBC of the disc.

2 reasons why we rip DVD's is because of the macrovision protection and the VOB data structure from which most of us would not be able to properly extract the info that we are after.

Otherwise you are basically dealing with regular mpeg or mpeg (in dat form) files with plenty of freeware tools that you can use to manipulate them.

VCD's (even pressed ones) have to conform to the more simple standard otherwise they would have to sell special players. The stuff you see in the vcd directory structure is only important to the (VCD) DVD player. You only need the mpg movie file(s).

  6. Well, that's kind of assuming that you only want the video tracks...

If you want to asssess the underlying interactivity of the disc and dissect/edit it, you will need to use VCDXRIP.
