Hi,
I am very new to this Video editing stuff. I have made created a mpeg file by selecting the SVCD option using Pinnacle Studio Standard version and burnt the video using NERO. I created another VCD version of the same movie. The VCD looks ok but in the SVCD whenever my son moves his hand I can see that the movemens are not smooth. I do not know the technical term for this. I am not sure as to what to try and where to start to create a SVCD that can have smoother movements.
I have a SONY DCR TRV40E DV Camcorder and have captured using a Firewire port and the conversion from AVI to mpeg with the rendering was done through software. If there is any settings or any other information which might be required to better explain my situation kindly let me know.
TIA

I forgot to mention that the Camera is a PAL model. I read in one article that it is better to capture at 30fps even if we were going to use it for other uses. I am not sure if this holds true for a PAL model

I cant't claim to be an expert on encoding DV to VCD (far from it in fact) but I have read many threads on this kind of issue on these forums. Usually the answer involves interlacing/de-interlacing when encoding. If you sue the main search button at the top of the forum index page I am sure you will find exactly what you need to know.
Hope this helps. -
it is probably your dvd player, some claim to handle svcd but some are better than others.

As the earlier posts I am also just a beginner, but as far as I understand the shacky image that sometimes comes with movement on SVCDs is due to wrong field-order in the interlacing - If you use TMPEnc, try reversing the field order under Other settings

Thanks for the information. Even though the terminology is new to me I will try to read more about it and try to create another movie and will keep you updated.
Thanks again.Trevor Benedict R

Trevor,
henriksh is correct. Your field order is wrong if the picture shakes when encoded as interlaced. The field order problem won't show up on a VCD, so that's why it looks fine when the SVCD shakes.
In the future reverse your field order, and encode as 32 inverse pulldown rather than interlaced. It will look better on both your monitor and TV set.
