  1. Is it possible to get a dvd rip onto one dvd without having to go through countless hours of re/de/encoding??? So far on two tries both dvd were about 7+gigs and stripping audio didnt do squat. Any help out there?

  2. Depends on the DVD...

    Short answer: No.

    Longer answer: One thing that is all the rage today among movie studios is to use DVD-9 dual-layer discs for their releases. Even if a movie is relatively short (90 min or less) and could easily be encoded to take up only 4.7 GB even with all EXTRAS on disc, the studios encode the video at such a high bitrate that it takes up 6-8 GB instead. Most any disc that had been released previously on DVD-5 that has a NEW RE-MASTERED SPECIAL EDITION on the shelves now has been "enhanced" to take up more space and cover two layers. So, if you know you want to copy a disc to DVD-5, and you don't want to re-encode the video, you must hunt down the "old" version, if it exists at all. New releases almost certainly will be DVD-9 by default. Until dual-layer DVD burners are available to the public (don't hold your breath) you will simply have to make do as best you can. [NOTE: Pornos and HK DVDs are almost always DVD-5, for future reference. ]
