I''ve read today that new Mac OS X 10.1 will provide the software iDVD. I am wondering if with this software can I create minidvds. Explaining better: does iDVD create files that I can record in a CDRW?

I don't think this would be possible. Allthough I don't know what iDVD 2 does, but iDVD 1 can't burn them. Apple is only giving them away with the new Quicksilvers with DVD-R, and they want their customers to buy the DVD-R models....like me
Can't wait to get that 1:1 MPEG 2 encoding sob
Then again maybe you can export the encoded MPEG2 stream and burn it with Toast and the PC app which changes it into a Toast conform bin/cue

to burn a "minidvd" on a cdr/w you have to save a disc image to the hard drive and then burn it with toast or similiar. DVD Studio Pro lets you do this. iDVD 1.0 dosn't.
maybe this will change in iDVD2.0 but that isn't very likely. -
Thanks. But even for you, owner of G4/DVD-R it will be a great application. For small home video it is a great solution because you can create DVD videos with menus, etc and record in a CD-R. Some new dvd players are compatible with minidvd, vcd and s-vcd. I intend to buy one of this. I am a hobbist and I am not insterested in DVD ripping. I only want to put my home movies in DVD format recorded in a CD and play the movie with the full quality (vcd isn't enough, s-vcd is almost, minidvd is what I want). We have to ask Apple to do this improvment in iDVD. It will be a great application like iMovie is.

cjayme,
I've been making miniDVDs from my own footage for a while. I you can, try to get DVDStudioPro, make a Video_TS folder and burn it to CD with Toast. I think that iDVD 2 will still be targeted to the "point and click" crowd and won't let you burn CDs, but who knows... -
When you burn in Toast, what format do you use? I would think DVD, but could be wrong.

DVD format indeed. And don't forget to also select "New DVD" from the menu.

Thanks silver356b,
DVD Studio Pro works but it is very expensive and it is for pros. I don't need all features it has, not yetiDVD 2 will be free for Mac OS X 10.1 owners. I think the software update to make this happen (minidvd from idvd) is so simple. Because of that I am using this forum to get more voices to convince Apple to do this improvement in iDVD 2. It will be nice, even for Apple.

Have I read this post correct.. you can make mini-DVs using DVD Studio Pro and a plain old CD Writer? Surely I must be reading this wrong.
Also is it possible to get DVD Studio Pro running an a G3 system... I've read its possible but how?

apt, yes you read correct and DVDSP runs on a G3, at least the 1.0 version (I run it on an iMac DV)

How did you get it to install.... I borrowed a copy from work (to test) and the installer wont let me install it?
A work around would be most grateful. -

mmmm.. a bit of a problem if you dont have access to a G4.... I wonder if there's anyway to hack the installer or use something like Tome Viewer like you can do with Apple installers?
