I've got a couple of hillarious video clips that are pretty "blocky" and pixelated.

Is there anyway to really clean them up and make them look better?

Is there any program that I could run them thru to look good?

    thanks

  2. Not really. Those blocks and pixels obviously are from the compression which you knew I'm sure, however, once the damage is done from compression, its done. It would be nice if we could download a 50MB DivX file and then "decompress" it and we get the original DVD quality or TV or whatever the source was but thats not really possible unless you have a digital video stuidio with about $200,000 worth of hardware in it.

  3. Not much you can do about it, but I suppose you could run the clip though vdub with smart smoother (i think thats what its called) and see what happens.

There ain't mush you can do, but in the future - try to encode with the 'soften noise'-filter of TMPGenc - that helps a lot if you know you get lots of artifacts in your mpg.

  5. There is a LOT you can do to make it look better, tho im sure there are "purists" here that will disagree with this suggestion. Just do it and you can see for yourself that it works.

I got this idea from viewing some pretty blocky jpg pics. If I increased the resolution of the blocky jpg in Photoshop, the blocks would disappear. I dont know why it works it just works. It shouldnt, but it does. The picture DOES NOT become sharper, it actually becomes a bit more blurred, but the blocks go. Probably a fair bit of wasted bits there but who cares, it looks better and i got the HD space. It looks a lot better when viewing and printing.

So as mpeg2 frames are essentially jpgs i thought id try it on a madonna video clip that had blockyness when she was doing all this spinning around. I took the VCD up from 352x288 (PAL) to 720x576. I also took up the bitrate to about 4000 so the increase in the resolution wouldnt suck the quality back out from the bitrate (res and bitrate are directly related). Ang guess what? no more blocks. The video doesnt look any sharper tho, just like the jpg didnt , but the blocks are gone.

Ok purists now youre gonna chime in and say" it doesnt make sense technically, it cant be done, it doesnt work" but hey , it does so go figure!!

    thanks for that, Blackout

but I guess my problem is not going to be solved that way(by changing res. and bitrate during capture).

I already have the clips that I can't find to download again. I'm still looking for a filter or encoding process that will improve the ones I already have.

Is there just no such program(I don't have, and can't afford Adobe Photoshop)

anyone know of a program out there?
