  1. Ok I am new to all this.. but generally TMPGE works for all the conversions I have worked with before.

Ok first and foremost I have a few .AVI files that I downloaded off the net. My Yahoo! player will not play them and my Windows Media Player plays them but only the audio... It will not play any video at all.

I opened up my handy TMPGE program to convert the files but it will not let me open the video files to convert them.. only the audio. Does anyone know what my problem is?! I'm sure the files are complete and I am almost positive that it dosen't have anything to do with the files themselves.. I just cannot figure it out.

I've seen a few other programs that convert .AVI to mpg (vcd).. but I need some freeware.. do any programs exist? And I don't know about the demos.. I have quite a few files to convert.

If anyone could help me by posting here, e-mailing me, or even private messaging me.. I would greatly appreciate it. I am totally confused and everyone here seems pretty helpful!

    Thanx for your time,
    Sean

  2. It sure does sound like its the files. Try to see if you can watch them with divx player. If not then i'd say it's the files. There are other freeware go on the left here under tools. 8)

  3. Ok.. so If I am able to view them with a DIVX player.. then there is hope for me??

I really hope so, because I spent forever getting these files and they are important to me!

    *crosses fingers*

One more question for now.. do you or anyone else happen to know where I would be able to find a DIVX player?? I don't have one.. but I'm thinking I should.

  4. You need the correct video codec for the files. There are many video codecs (not just Divx). Try installing the Nimo codec, it contains a grab-bag of codecs. Otherwise you need to find the fourc value for the codec (use virtualdub I think, or the fourc changer in XVid)

  5. For the divx just run a search and download one it's a freeware.

That is correct, Nimo will give you 99.9% of the codecs you need. If your unlucky you may have a AVI that has been made with DivX 5, so you will need that also.

  7. Just a minor point,
there are many AVI codecs besides DIVX. For instance
    Huffyuv
    Intel Indeo
    various MPEG4 (not Divx)
    PICVideo codecs

    and lots more.

Well the problem is, everyone is using different codec's, some do it so you cannot edit the AVI (Playback only) these are the people who like to give you a copy of something, but don't want you to copy it

Then there are DVD rips, cartoons, fast motion movies and a whole lot more. The original DivX 3.11 Alpha is a good codec, but since then we have seen a whole lot more of this original hack. On top of this we have DIVX DivX and DivX with www.divx.com producing yet another. So a whole lot of codec's out there.

Then there is codec's like M$ MPEG-4 V3, which M$ want people to use in ASF only, but some people want to use it in AVI so at the end of the day, rather than wait until you have a problem AVI, it may be better to install Nimo and be ready for anything you get (Except DIVX 5 that is) Then you can get on with the job, without having to keep downloading codec's every 5 minuets.
