  1. I have a basic problem. The card is installed and appears to work fine as a video/tv card. The ATI MMC VCR works etc and it is possible to capture using bundled ULead Video Studio 5.0 se. I do have a problem with other capture etc programs, both TMPGEnc and Pinnacle Studio 7 report that "no capture device found". I have upgraded to the latest driver from the manufacturer's web site and have installed the latest motherboard chipset drivers from Intel (I850 chipset) to no avail. Have checked Control Panel>Multimedia>Devices>Video Capture Devices. The only entries are:
    Microsoft WDM Image Capture
    STV0680 Camera
(No mention of any ATI device)
The card shows in Device Manager>Display Adapters as 'All in Wonder RADEON 8500DV Edition' and is reported to be working properly. So far, the manufacturer's support dept has not come up with an answer so would be grateful for any help and would particularly like to know should the card show under the Control Panel>Multimedia>Devices>Video Capture Devices tab?

  2. Did you previously have a Pinnacle Studio PCTV or similar product installed in your system? I believe Pinnacle software only works with their own cards, though I could be wrong. I was not aware that TMPGEnc had any form of video capture functionality... Perhaps you meant VirtualDub? I know there have been some issues regarding the AIW cards and VirtualDub... Do a search in the forums here regarding that for more information.

Maybe you should check to see if the various versions of The Fly will recognize your system's video capture capabilities. Capture Studio 4.05 Professional may also fit your video capture needs. [NOTE: I would suggest another, but I can't remember its name right now.]

Finally, you don't mention your operating system or computer specifications. What are you running? There might be some other conflicts you haven't considered.

  3. Absolutely right- did mean VirtualDub V1.3c produces Error 418 'capture device was not detected'. Having scoured the various posts that suggest it would work with an ATI card, loaded pinnacle studio 7 which was also unable to find the 8500DV! (Wanted to use Studio 7 rather than the bundled ULead software as am more familiar with it). Guides in the 'Capture' part of this site would seem to indicate that VirtualDub should recognise the 8500DV with no problem which is why I wonder if I messed up the installation somehow!!! Am running W98se and my system details are available via the button.

  4. VirtualDub V1.3c produces Error 418 'capture device was not detected'
That is part of your problem right there, your copy of VirtualDub is too old. I believe a patch to VirtualDub was made to fix the problem with AIW Radeon cards several builds ago. Go to VirtualDub.org and download it's latest version, V.1.4.10 and install it to upgrade.

Other than that, it seems that something about your installation process must have been done in the wrong order. If you have another generic video card lying around, try this... Download the latest drivers for your AIW Radeon 8500DV, but do not install them. Unsinstall the 8500DV. Shut down the system. Remove the 8500DV. Install the generic video card. Boot the system again. Windows plugnpray should assign a generic driver to that card. Uninstall that card. Remove it from the system. Now, put the 8500DV back in. Follow the EXACT instructions from ATi on how to install it. With any luck, the Windows Device Manager should see all the functions of the card now. Likewise, all the video capture software on your system, including VirtualDub V1.4.10 for all your needs.

  5. I tried the 'remove the card' trick, used the ATI 'uninstall' feature to remove drivers/software, but when the card was replaced and the system booted, 'new hardware found' just went straight into loading the drivers. Presume it will be necessary to go through the process again and after uninstalling the ATI drivers do a wildcard search for all 'ATI' files and delete them prior to re-installing the 8500DV, or do I just have to make sure that the files listed under the 'device manager' 'driver file details' tab + any*ATI.inf files are gone? (Have downloaded latest VirtualDub thanks.)
