8) I have a movie in MPEG format , which I want to convert to AVI (Divx !!!) but Virtualdub says it is a format it doesn't recognise. Plays ok in WMP so must be ok
Any ideas how I can convert it thanks

tmpgenc is said to be best converter.

Man, are you sure that you have MPEG ?
It may be MPEG2 with 'mpg' extention.
In this case VirtualDub definitely will not take it. -
One file has.MPG the other .MPEG how do I know if it is MPEG 1 or 2
Does it make a difference trying to convert to AVi (DIVX)

Try TMPGenc. If it does not take it than it's most likely MPEG2.
You'll see the massage.
Of course, it's different from MPEG1. MPEG2 is used in SVCD. -
If you have Power DVD you can play it there and right click when you are playing the movie and select Show Information. That should tell you the video format, bitrate, audio format and bitrate, etc. Also, if it is a mpeg 2 then you can't convert it to DivX with VirtualDub.
